‘There should be a warning on the bag’: Sprouts customer eats Brazil nuts. Then…
TikTok user Shanice Marie (@_theshanicemarie_) found herself in serious danger after consuming too many Brazil nuts.
A recent viral video featuring TikTok user @theshanicemarie has sparked discussions about the potential dangers of overconsuming Brazil nuts. In her video, the creator recounts a distressing experience after reportedly eating an entire bag of Brazil nuts in one sitting. She described waking up in severe pain, prompting her to research the nuts' nutritional content. According to @theshanicemarie, her research revealed that Brazil nuts contain high levels of selenium, a mineral that can be toxic in excessive amounts. She expressed shock that this information is not more widely known or clearly indicated on product packaging, stating that consuming too many could lead to serious health issues, including paralysis. While Brazil nuts are celebrated for their nutritional benefits, particularly their high selenium content which supports thyroid function and acts as an antioxidant, health experts generally advise moderation. The recommended daily intake of selenium is typically around 55 micrograms for adults, and a single Brazil nut can contain between 60 to 100 micrograms. Excessive intake of selenium, known as selenosis, can lead to symptoms such as hair loss, nail brittleness, skin lesions, fatigue, and in severe cases, neurological problems or even death. This incident serves as a crucial reminder for consumers to be mindful of portion sizes, especially for nutrient-dense foods like Brazil nuts, and to be aware of potential risks associated with overconsumption.
