A young Cuban woman, identified as anita.mateu, recently shared a poignant video detailing her experiences living in Spain compared to her upbringing in Cuba. In the video, she articulates why she now considers herself "rich," attributing this feeling to fundamental daily privileges that were once unattainable. "Now I have certain privileges that I never had before," she stated, emphasizing that these were not even available to the wealthy in Cuba. Her reflections centered on three key areas: food, clothing, and dining out. Regarding food, she noted the overwhelming variety at Spanish supermarkets. "I have so many options that I don't know what I'm going to eat today," she explained, contrasting this with Cuba where meals were predictable, often consisting of "rice and beans, with whatever meat was available, usually chicken, croquettes, or sausages." She highlighted that even after two years in Spain, she still discovers new products. On clothing, she expressed astonishment at the sheer volume of clothes she now owns. "I never thought I would have so many clothes," she said, recalling a time in Cuba when she possessed only "three rags" often inherited from cousins living abroad. She described how in Cuba, clothing was categorized into "daily wear" and "going out clothes," with the latter being a very limited selection of her best items. Finally, the ability to dine out freely was another significant privilege. "Today I want to go to a sushi place, or another place," she remarked, highlighting the spontaneity of choosing a restaurant. This contrasts sharply with Cuba, where eating out was reserved for "birthdays or special occasions." She concluded that such simple choices, once considered luxuries, now define her sense of wealth.
