Summer brings increased risks of otitis, but simple precautions can protect your ears, according to Dr. Miguel Vaca González, Vocal of the Otology Commission. As temperatures rise and pool visits become more frequent, the combination of heat and humidity creates an ideal environment for ear infections. Dr. Vaca emphasizes several key preventative measures: Firstly, ensure your ears are thoroughly dried after swimming. "Humidity is the perfect environment for bacteria proliferation," he stated. Secondly, avoid the use of cotton swabs. Dr. Vaca warned, "They can irritate the external auditory canal and also push earwax inwards, potentially causing blockages or further irritation." Thirdly, for individuals prone to ear infections, using specific earplugs designed for water activities is highly recommended. Finally, Dr. Vaca advises against sudden dives. "The pressure can damage the eardrum or allow water to enter, increasing infection risk," he explained. He concluded by urging the public to prioritize ear care during holidays and to seek professional medical advice if any discomfort or symptoms arise, reinforcing that prevention is always better than cure.
