New York, NY Professional Makeup Artist Tiffany Lumpkin Demystifies Setting and Fixing Sprays In a recent viral video, professional makeup artist Tiffany Lumpkin, boasting over 15 years of industry experience, shed light on a common misconception among makeup users: the difference between setting sprays and fixing sprays. Lumpkin emphasized that understanding these distinctions is key to achieving truly long-lasting makeup. "The biggest mistake I see people do as a makeup artist, as a professional makeup artist who's been doing this over 15 years, is not knowing the difference between a setting spray and a fixing spray," Lumpkin stated in her video, filmed inside a Sephora store. She explained that many get frustrated when their "setting spray doesn't work" because they misunderstand its purpose. According to Lumpkin, setting sprays are primarily water-based products designed to "hydrate the makeup" and "make the skin look like skin." She highlighted that water is typically the first ingredient in these sprays. "These products are meant to just hydrate the skin, to rapidly oxidize the skin," she clarified, adding that they are "not meant for longevity. They're not waterproof, they're not water-resistant, they're not sweat-proof." In contrast, Lumpkin introduced fixing sprays as the solution for long-wear makeup. "A fixing spray is going to be alcohol-based," she explained, showcasing a popular product. She noted that fixing sprays contain ingredients such as butane and magnesium carbonate, which "basically just absorbs all the oils." Lumpkin pointed out that fixing sprays are "great for performers, this is great for weddings," and are designed to make makeup "waterproof, sweat-proof, transfer-proof." She even mentioned that Beyoncé used a fixing spray on her Renaissance Tour. Lumpkin concluded her informative session by advising consumers to "know what you are buying. Focus on ingredients, not labels," empowering them to make informed choices for their makeup routines.
