Zadar Police Heroes: Dramatic Rescue Saves Family from Burning Home

ZADAR, Croatia – Four police officers from Zadar demonstrated extraordinary bravery in the early hours of Friday, July 18, 2025, when they successfully rescued a family trapped inside their burning home in the Brodarica district. The incident, which occurred around 3:15 AM, saw officers respond swiftly to a distress call reporting a fire and a family unable to escape. One of the heroic officers, whose identity was not fully disclosed in the video but spoke on behalf of the team, recounted the harrowing experience. "We received a call from dispatch about a fire in a family house in Brodarica, Zadar, and that a family was trapped inside," he stated. "Given it was 3:15 AM, it was immediately clear this could be dangerous as people are mostly asleep, and a great tragedy could occur." Upon arrival, the officers observed dense black smoke billowing from the entire house and a panicked crowd outside. "We entered the elevated ground floor of the house. We first assessed the staircase to see what awaited us and found an immense amount of black smoke," the officer explained. "It was also clear it was so hot that one couldn't stay there for too long." The officers quickly re-established communication with the trapped family, who reported difficulty breathing and were taking turns at a window to get air. Recognizing the urgency, the police made a swift decision. "We decided that since we didn't have much time, we had a quick discussion on how to proceed and decided to go up for the evacuation," he said. The team coordinated their entry, positioning themselves at key points on the staircase to guide the family out. "They opened the door and moved to the safest possible place," the officer continued. "When we entered the apartment where the family was, there was no air left at all. They managed to take a last breath at the window." Within 10 to 15 seconds, the officers successfully led the family out of the burning building to safety. One officer, Matija Režan, was later treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation but is recovering well. "The greatest reward is that the people are well and that our colleague is well," the officer concluded. "That's why we are here. God forbid such situations happen again, but if they do, we are ready." The grateful residents provided the officers with drinks and water after the intense rescue.
