Málaga Youth Detention Center Sparks Outrage in Churriana
Churriana residents are up in arms over the impending opening of a new youth detention center in their neighborhood. The Junta de Andalucía, the regional government of Andalusia, plans to open the center in a former convent in early June. However, residents argue the location is unsuitable and have been actively protesting for a month, presenting official documents to support their claims. "We will exhaust every avenue to prevent this," stated one resident. Antonio Alcázar, spokesperson for Vox, a political party in Málaga, commented, "We believe this is not the most appropriate location." Dani Pérez, spokesperson for PSOE, another political party, echoed this sentiment, stating, "We believe another location could have been found that would generate more consensus." Con Málaga, a local organization, has also stated that they will not participate in campaigns that stigmatize these young people. The situation highlights the ongoing tension between the needs of vulnerable youth and the concerns of local communities.
