Málaga Mayor Addresses Churriana Residents' Concerns Over Youth Detention Center
Málaga Mayor Promises Meeting After Churriana CIMI Protest A protest erupted in Churriana, Málaga, on May 31, 2025, as residents voiced strong opposition to the planned opening of a new Center for Internment of Minor Offenders (CIMI). Approximately 20 residents gathered outside a local PP convention to express their concerns directly to the mayor of Málaga and a regional Junta delegate. The demonstration, captured on video by 101TV Málaga, showed residents holding signs reading "Ayto y Junta no a la cárcel de menores en Churriana!" (City Hall and Junta, no to the juvenile prison in Churriana!). One resident, speaking to 101TV Málaga, stated, "We are worried about the safety of our children and the impact this center will have on our community." The mayor, in response, committed to meeting with the residents to discuss their concerns and address their questions. The Junta delegate also pledged to participate in this meeting. This commitment offers a positive path forward, demonstrating a willingness from local authorities to engage with the community and find a solution that addresses the residents' anxieties.
