Fuego Volcano Erupts: Hundreds Evacuated in Guatemala
Fuego Volcano Erupts in Guatemala, Forcing Hundreds to Evacuate Guatemalan authorities launched an emergency evacuation of over 500 residents Thursday following a significant eruption of the Fuego Volcano. The volcano, located in Central America, unleashed a torrent of ash and lava, prompting the government to issue an orange alert. Residents from nearby towns were moved to four designated shelters. The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology reported that the eruption began Wednesday evening, with ash plumes reaching 6,000 meters above sea level and pyroclastic flows extending up to 7 kilometers. "Here in El Porvenir, approximately 75 people are already in shelters," stated Juan Jose Chavez, a volunteer firefighter, in an interview near the scene. He also noted that coordination with neighboring municipalities was underway to provide additional support, including the dispatch of buses to aid in the evacuations. The eruption continues, with ongoing flows of pyroclastic material.
