Timor-Leste's Path to ASEAN Membership: Economic Hurdles and Diplomatic Support
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Timor-Leste's path to full ASEAN membership is progressing, though economic challenges remain a key hurdle. This was the central message from Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato' Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan during a recent press conference. According to the Minister, "Most of the constraints for Timor Leste are from the economic sector." He further explained that while Malaysia and other ASEAN members are committed to assisting Timor-Leste, the nation must actively work to meet the remaining legal requirements for full membership. Of the 84 required legal instruments, 66 have been completed. The video showcases footage from the ASEAN Summits in 2022, where leaders reaffirmed their support for Timor-Leste's integration. This active engagement suggests a positive outlook for Timor-Leste's future as a full member of the ASEAN bloc.
