Malaysia urged to invest in ASEAN agriculture for food security
Malaysia urged to explore cross-border agricultural investment in ASEAN to boost food security. Kuala Lumpur, May 27, 2025 - A recent Astro Awani news report highlights the potential benefits for Malaysia to invest in neighboring countries' agricultural sectors. According to Professor Madya Ts. Dr. Fazlin Abdul Fattah, Deputy Dean of Education and Industry Network at the Faculty of Plantation and Agrotechnology, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), investing in countries like Cambodia and Laos could significantly enhance Malaysia's food security. "Malaysia can leverage this opportunity by investing in agricultural land in neighboring countries," said Professor Fattah. The report suggests exploring contract farming models for staple foods like rice and corn. Professor Fattah also emphasized the potential for creating regional agricultural hubs focusing on organic produce, halal food, or advanced agricultural technologies. This cross-border investment strategy is projected to strengthen regional collaboration and contribute to a more secure food supply within ASEAN.
