Johor Drug Syndicate Busted: WeChat Used for Illegal Transactions
Johor Drug Syndicate Busted: WeChat Used for Illegal Transactions Johor Bahru, Malaysia – In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Johor Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department recently dismantled a syndicate using the WeChat app for its operations. Two separate raids conducted on May 20th and 21st, 2025, led to the arrest of seven suspects. Among those arrested was a Myanmar national. The raids resulted in the seizure of a substantial amount of drugs, including ecstasy, heroin, ketamine, syabu, and Erimin-5, with an estimated street value exceeding 1.3 million Ringgit. Three cars and two motorcycles were also confiscated. "All transactions were done through WeChat," stated Datuk M.Kumar, Johor Police Chief, during a press conference. This innovative method allowed the syndicate to operate with a degree of anonymity. The police chief further explained the syndicate's modus operandi, "Buyers would contact the syndicate through WeChat, and the drugs would be left at pre-arranged locations. The buyer would then leave the payment at the same spot." The seven suspects are currently remanded until June 2nd, and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. This successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts of Malaysian law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and highlights the challenges posed by the use of technology in criminal activities.
