Malaysia Cracks Down on Overloaded Port Vehicles, Offers Incentives
Malaysia Strengthens Enforcement Against Overloaded Vehicles at Ports Kuala Lumpur, May 29, 2025 – The Malaysian government is taking steps to address the issue of overloaded vehicles at its ports. Starting July 1, 2025, stricter enforcement measures will be implemented across all Federation Ports in Peninsular Malaysia. Transport Minister Anthony Loke made the announcement, stating, "The enforcement will be implemented starting July 1st next year." He also clarified that port authorities will communicate the specific regulations to industry stakeholders. To incentivize compliance and mitigate traffic congestion, the government is offering financial incentives. Cargo transporters using Port Klang during off-peak hours will receive RM15,000 for two-way trips and RM7,500 for one-way trips. This initiative is expected to improve efficiency and reduce congestion at the port. The minister urged industry players, especially lorry operators, to familiarize themselves with the new regulations and adhere to weight limits to avoid penalties and disruptions to operations. The move is seen as a positive step towards improving port operations and safety in Malaysia.
