Sun Bear Sightings Terrorize Malaysian Village
Residents of Rantau Manis, a town in Gua Musang, Kelantan, Malaysia, are living in fear due to the frequent appearances of sun bears near their homes over the past three months. According to Roslee Ibrahim, the chairman of the Taman Agropolitan Rantau Manis Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), the bears have been spotted in residential areas, Phase 1, and more recently in Kampung Sepuluh. "The relevant bear has been seen roaming around the housing area," Ibrahim stated. Residents report the bears have damaged crops like nangka (jackfruit) and coconuts. One resident, commenting on the damage, said: "They've even eaten the chickens!" The state assemblyman, Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, confirmed that reports have been filed with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) to address the threat posed by the sun bears. Authorities are working to capture the bears and ensure the safety of the residents. Meanwhile, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any further sightings to the relevant authorities.
