Malaysia to Boost Rural Economies with New Tamu Markets
More Rural Tamu Markets Coming to Sabah and Sarawak Kuala Lumpur, June 2, 2025 – The Malaysian government, under its Madani economic plan, is investing in rural development. The Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development (KUSKOP) announced plans to construct additional rural tamu markets in Sabah and Sarawak this year. This initiative aims to boost rural economies and support local entrepreneurs. Minister Datuk Iwan Benedick stated, "The Madani government, through KUSKOP, is allocating RM20 million to build and upgrade these markets." This commitment builds upon last year's success, where KUSKOP constructed and improved 98 tamu markets across Sabah and Sarawak. The minister hopes to match or exceed that number in 2025. The allocation includes an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a recent Madani Rakyat program. This substantial investment demonstrates the government's dedication to improving rural infrastructure and supporting local businesses. The project is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in these regions.
