Local Student Freed on Bond After ICE Detention
Milford High School student Marcelo Gomes da Silva, detained by ICE last Saturday, was released on a $2,000 bond following a four-minute hearing at the Chelmsford Immigration Court. The judge's decision came after a demonstration by Silva's supporters, who expressed relief at the outcome. "He is not a danger," stated the judge, adding that Silva also posed no flight risk. Silva, who has no criminal record, was arrested by ICE for being undocumented while on his way to volleyball practice. One supporter, visibly emotional, said, "We are so happy he's free! This is a victory for justice." The government did not contest the bond request. The swift resolution of the case and the community support highlight the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policies and their impact on individuals.
