Ukraine's Daring Drone Strike: Over 40 Russian Planes Destroyed
A large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on Russian airfields has destroyed over 40 military aircraft, according to a Ukrainian security official who spoke to the Associated Press. The official, who remained anonymous to protect operational details, stated that the operation, codenamed "Spider's Web," took 18 months of careful planning and was personally overseen by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The drones were initially smuggled into Russia, concealed within the roof cavities of small wooden sheds. These sheds were then transported to the periphery of Russian airfields, where the roofs were remotely opened to launch the drones. The attack resulted in the destruction or significant damage to at least 40 Russian long-range bombers, aircraft frequently used to launch missiles into Ukrainian territory. President Zelenskyy praised the operation as an "absolutely brilliant result." This daring attack comes just one day before Russia and Ukraine are scheduled to meet in Istanbul for another round of US-backed peace negotiations. Adding to the tension, Russia has accused Ukraine of sabotaging several of its bridges. In one instance, a bridge collapse caused a train derailment that resulted in seven deaths and numerous injuries. A second bridge also collapsed while a train was crossing, highlighting the escalating conflict and the stakes of the upcoming negotiations. The events underscore the complex and dangerous situation in the region, and the determination of both sides to pursue their objectives.
