Karachi's Eid al-Adha Waste Crisis: A City Grapples with Mountains of Garbage Karachi, Pakistan, June 7, 2025 – The city of Karachi faced a significant waste management challenge during the recent Eid al-Adha celebrations. Mountains of animal waste and garbage piled up in various areas, posing a serious threat to public health and sanitation. Aaj News correspondent Shahzib Hussain reported from the scene, highlighting the difficulties faced by the city's sanitation workers and residents. "The amount of waste generated during Eid al-Adha is overwhelming," said Hussain, standing amidst a large pile of animal remains. "Despite the efforts of the Sindh Solid Waste Management department, the sheer volume of waste is difficult to manage." The video footage shows overflowing garbage bins, heaps of animal carcasses, and workers struggling to collect and transport the waste. The situation is particularly dire in densely populated areas such as Gulberg Town and Baldia Town, where residents report unpleasant odors and health concerns. Sindh Solid Waste Management has deployed 16,000 workers to address the crisis, and established 98 collection points. However, the scale of the problem remains significant, highlighting the need for long-term solutions to address Karachi's waste management challenges. The city's 1128 helpline has been activated to assist residents with waste disposal concerns. Despite the challenges, the efforts of the sanitation workers and the establishment of collection points offer a glimmer of hope. The ongoing cleanup efforts demonstrate a commitment to addressing this critical issue and improving sanitation in Karachi.
