Chicago Schools Narrow Down Interim CEO Candidates to Five
Chicago Public Schools Seeks Interim CEO: Five Finalists Vie for Top Post Chicago, IL – The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is currently searching for an interim CEO to replace Pedro Martinez, who is leaving the position within the month. The school board has narrowed the field of candidates to five finalists. Three finalists are internal CPS candidates, showcasing experience within the system. Adding to the mix is an outside candidate with superintendent experience from another city. Intriguingly, one candidate is currently employed within Mayor Brandon Johnson's office. "We are actively moving quickly through an interim selection process," stated Jessica Biggs, an elected school board member. The board aims to have the interim CEO in place before Martinez departs. The urgency stems from the approaching end of the school year and the ongoing budget crisis. Appointed school board member Debby Pope highlighted the importance of continuity for the district, stating, "We're looking for someone who has education background and experience; someone who can work with us on resolving the budget crisis." The board's decision will be made at their June board meeting. While Mayor Johnson's chief of staff, Christina Pasionzas, was initially considered, she lacks the required superintendent's license, a new requirement unanimously passed by the school board. The board is hopeful that a permanent superintendent will be in place by the second half of the next school year. Community engagement meetings have been held to gather public input, with another meeting scheduled. The public largely wants an educator to lead the district.
