End of an Era: Historic Radio Towers Demolished in Downers Grove
Downers Grove bids farewell to iconic radio towers. On Monday, June 2nd, 2025, three towering radio transmission structures met their end in a planned demolition. The event, captured by ABC7 Chicago's Chopper 7, marked the close of an era for many residents who considered the towers landmarks on the 100 block of 39th Street. The tallest tower stood at an impressive 480 feet. "The demolition marked the end of the transmitter site that was previously used for WCFL, WLUP AM and ESPN 100," reported the ABC7 news crew. While these were not the original towers—those were erected in 1932 and replaced in 2003—their removal still evoked a sense of nostalgia and the passing of time. The demolition was professionally executed, leaving behind a cleared space where the giants once stood. The event serves as a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of technology and urban development.
