Iconic Radio Towers Crumble in Downers Grove, Marking End of an Era
Downers Grove, IL, bid farewell to three iconic radio towers on Monday, as demolition crews brought down the structures that had stood as landmarks for decades. The tallest of the three, reaching a height of 480 feet, was the centerpiece of a transmitter site that once served stations WCFL, WLUP AM, and ESPN 1000. "It's the end of an era," said a local resident who watched the demolition. The original towers were built in 1932, but these were replaced in 2003. The demolition marked not only the end of an era for broadcasting in the area but also a significant change to the Downers Grove skyline. The event was captured on video by ABC7 Chicago's Chopper 7, providing stunning visuals of the controlled collapse. While the loss of the towers is bittersweet for some, the site's redevelopment promises new opportunities for the community.
