LA Curfew: Anti-ICE Protests Lead to Emergency Measures
Los Angeles Curfew Imposed Amid Anti-ICE Protests Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass imposed a curfew on Tuesday night in response to escalating violence and looting during ongoing anti-ICE protests. The protests, which entered their fifth day, have seen demonstrators blocking major freeways and engaging in clashes with law enforcement. "We reached a tipping point," Bass said in a news conference, citing 23 businesses that were looted. The curfew, effective from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, covers a one-square-mile area in Downtown Los Angeles. Footage from ABC7 Chicago shows protesters blocking the busy 101 freeway during evening rush hour. Police officers and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were seen attempting to control the situation. The video also captures the moment when police took some protesters into custody. Adding to the tension, 700 active-duty Marines were deployed to the area, joining 4,000 members of the California National Guard. The deployment was ordered by the President, not the governor. One reporter stated, "All of these people are trapped off of the 101 on both sides of the freeway because protesters right now have taken the 101." The situation highlights the challenges faced by authorities in balancing the right to protest with maintaining public order and safety.
