TikTok Trend Sparks Chromebook Fires in Schools Across US
A dangerous new trend on TikTok is causing fires in schools across the United States. Students are inserting objects into the charging ports of their Chromebooks, causing the devices to overheat and ignite. The Colorado Springs Fire Department has reported more than 30 incidents in recent weeks. "This really spread quickly, and that of course is concerning because this is not unique to anyone's state; it's not unique to anyone's zip code," said Kathy Hook, Youth Firesetting Program Manager for the Colorado Springs Fire Department. School districts are taking action, warning parents and sharing images of the damage. Dr. Maureen Brummett, Superintendent of Schools for Newington Public Schools, stated that a teacher noticed a Chromebook that was smoking and immediately pulled the fire alarm, evacuating the entire school. The incidents highlight the need for increased awareness and safety precautions among students and school officials.
