Sydney Childcare Center Scandal: Baby Slapped Repeatedly, Worker Sentenced
Childcare Worker Charged After Video Shows Repeated Slapping of Baby A disturbing video has emerged showing a childcare worker repeatedly slapping a baby at an Affinity Education centre in Sydney. The incident, uncovered by ABC Investigations, sparked outrage and raised serious questions about child safety in childcare facilities. The video, which contains distressing footage, shows the worker slapping the infant multiple times. Former Affinity manager, Chey Carter, reacted with shock, stating, "Why is that being filmed on Snapchat? Like, the torment of a child. Literally making fun of a child's distress." Former educator Loretta Dodwell added, "Oh my gosh, that is terrible." The worker was subsequently charged with common assault and sentenced to a community correction order. No fine was imposed. Affinity Education released a statement saying they took action only after being notified by the police. One worker was sacked, while another resigned. The regulator mandated additional training for managers and banned the educator for 12 months. CEO Tim Hickey declined an interview request. However, in a statement, he expressed profound sorrow that such an incident occurred under their care. This incident highlights the critical need for robust oversight and improved training within the childcare sector to ensure the safety and well-being of children.
