CÁDIZ, SPAIN – Deep within the Natural Park of Los Alcornocales in Cádiz, a unique and ancient ecosystem known as the 'Bosque de la Niebla' (Fog Forest) continues to thrive, representing the last laurisilva forest on the Iberian Peninsula. This relict laurel forest, a remnant from the Tertiary period, owes its survival to specific geological conditions and high altitude that allow it to capture moisture from the frequent fog, occurring up to 245 days a year. An expert from AL ÁNDALUS ECOTURISMO, a local guided tour operator, explained the forest's ecological significance. "The constant humidity fosters an incredible diversity of mosses, lichens, fungi, and ferns," he stated. "The laurifolia plants here have adapted to mimic laurel, enabling them to retain the necessary hydration in this perpetually misty environment." This unique habitat, which offers a glimpse into prehistoric landscapes, is under the highest level of environmental protection, requiring authorized guided visits to ensure its preservation for future generations.
