Desperate Scramble for Bread in Gaza as Israel Eases Blockade
Gaza residents desperately scramble for bread, the first freshly baked in weeks, after Israel partially eases its total blockade of the strip. The video from Al Jazeera English shows people climbing over each other to get their share of the baked goods. Vladimir Jovcev of the World Food Programme states, "What we brought is definitely not enough, but we hope that the borders will remain open and we'll be able to bring more aid." The bakery, in Deir el-Balah, restarted production after receiving enough flour. However, this is just one facility providing for a small section of Gaza, where almost the entire population is at risk of famine. Humanitarian experts estimate that the strip needs almost 600 trucks of aid daily, yet only a fraction of that is currently reaching the people.
