Netflix, Tyler Perry, and Terri Vaughn Sued for Trademark Infringement
Aimee Allison, founder of the non-profit organization She the People, has filed a lawsuit against Tyler Perry, Netflix, and actress Terri Vaughn, alleging trademark infringement. The suit centers around Netflix's series, "She the People," which Allison claims incorporates themes and ideas directly from her organization without permission. Allison launched She the People in 2018, a non-profit focused on empowering women of color in politics. In 2020, she approached Tyler Perry Studios about creating a documentary about her organization. While collaborating with Terri Vaughn, who she believed was part of the studio, Allison shared themes and ideas. However, in April 2025, her attempt to trademark "She the People" was denied. Allison now claims that Tyler Perry Studios used her intellectual property in their Netflix series. "They took my ideas and used them with only slight alterations," Allison stated in an interview. None of the defendants have yet responded to the lawsuit. The case highlights the importance of intellectual property rights in the entertainment industry and the challenges faced by non-profit organizations in protecting their work.
