Mother's Two-Year Battle: Botox Injections Lead to Botulism and Brain Strokes

Goodhope, Georgia – Amanda Wolaver, a 33-year-old mother of three, is sharing her two-year ordeal after routine anti-wrinkle injections led to a severe and life-altering medical condition. What began as a cosmetic procedure she had undergone for a decade without issue, quickly escalated into a battle for her health. Two years ago, Wolaver received 104 units of Dysport, a Botox alternative, injected into her forehead, crow's feet, and eleven lines. The very next day, she woke up unable to move, walk, or function, experiencing severe headaches and dizziness. Initial hospital visits and CT scans revealed no abnormalities, and doctors attributed her symptoms to a severe migraine. As her condition progressively worsened, Wolaver became housebound for four months. Everyday tasks like showering and doing her makeup became a struggle, and she reported losing friends and being unable to engage with her family due to her debilitating dizziness, triggered by loud noises and strong smells. "I thought I was slowly dying," she stated. After numerous tests and multiple hospital visits, including a heart monitor implant and spinal tap surgeries, a neurologist finally diagnosed her with iatrogenic botulism, a rare neuromuscular disease caused by botulinum neurotoxins. An MRI also revealed that she had suffered multiple TIA (transient ischemic attack) strokes in her brain. Wolaver, who describes feeling like a "lab rat" during her extensive diagnostic journey, has since cut out caffeine and soda and even had her breast implants removed in an effort to detoxify her body. "It was a bittersweet moment," she said, acknowledging that while she is slowly recovering, there is no promise of a full return to normal. "It's almost been two years and I still don't feel normal." Her experience has prompted her to educate others about the potential dangers of botulinum toxins. "I learned the cost of beauty the hard way," Wolaver reflected, emphasizing the importance of awareness regarding such procedures.
