Budapest, Hungary – A widespread malfunction of Hungary's Electronic Health Service Space (EESZT) system has reportedly left thousands of patients unable to obtain prescribed medications and doctors unable to access vital patient medical histories. The system, which stores critical health data and facilitates electronic prescriptions, has been down for an unspecified period, causing significant disruption to healthcare services across the country. Concerns are mounting among patients and medical professionals, with reports indicating that individuals requiring essential medications, including insulin for diabetes, are facing severe challenges. Doctors are also reportedly unable to view past lab results, CT scans, and MRI findings, hindering accurate diagnoses and treatment. Critics have pointed to a perceived lack of transparency and a delayed response from government officials. State Secretary Takács Péter issued a public statement after 24 hours, which has been described by some as uninformative and lacking empathy regarding the crisis. Further allegations have surfaced concerning a past ventilator procurement scandal during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is claimed that a company linked to the State Secretary's brother-in-law allegedly profited significantly from these deals. Opponents suggest that these funds could have been invested in strengthening the healthcare infrastructure, including upgrading EESZT servers or increasing nursing staff salaries. The call for the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Health and comprehensive healthcare reform has been reiterated in light of the current situation.
