Brussels, November 6, 2025 – A new initiative spearheaded by French President Emmanuel Macron to establish an international fund for the support of 'public interest press' within the European Union has ignited a debate among political commentators and public figures. The fund, which is intended to replace previous USAID programs that supported various media outlets, is reportedly to be financed entirely by EU taxpayer money. This development follows a declaration signed by 29 states in Paris, outlining the framework for this new financial mechanism. Critics, such as Romanian political commentator Andrei Gușă, have voiced strong concerns, suggesting that the fund could inadvertently foster a resurgence of 'progressive propaganda' across the continent. In a recent statement, Gușă articulated his apprehension, stating, 'After Donald Trump closed the USAID program that sponsored the democratic, progressive press in the European Union and beyond, Emmanuel Macron announces a kind of monetary fund that, with taxpayers' money, will support the so-called independent press.' He further questioned the impartiality of such a system: 'The question arises: who chooses which is, in fact, this so-called independent press? Are not some unknown officials who have not been voted for by EU citizens, but who spend EU citizens' money, spending our money as they please?' Gușă also highlighted potential issues of unfair competition for media entities not receiving such subsidies. The controversy underscores ongoing discussions about media independence, political influence, and the allocation of public funds in shaping public discourse within the European Union.
