Jesús Ferreiro, divulgador del 'Titanic', revela la verdad sobre los botes salvavidas: "Cumplía la ley"
Madrid, Spain – In a recent podcast interview, Jesús Ferreiro, the esteemed President of the Titanic Foundation, shed new light on the enduring mystery surrounding the insufficient lifeboats aboard the RMS Titanic. Contrary to popular belief, Ferreiro explained that the Titanic adhered to, and even surpassed, the maritime laws of its time regarding lifeboat provisions. “The law at the time stipulated lifeboat capacity based on the ship’s tonnage, not the number of passengers it could carry,” Ferreiro stated. He further elaborated that the Titanic was equipped with more lifeboats than legally required for its size. However, these lifeboats could only accommodate approximately 1,000 people, while the ship carried over 2,000 passengers and crew. Ferreiro also revealed a critical factor contributing to the tragedy: initial disbelief among those on board. “Many people initially thought the evacuation was just a drill or a simulation,” he said. “They didn’t believe such a grand ship could sink.” This widespread skepticism led to a tragic outcome, as many of the first lifeboats launched departed with less than half their potential capacity filled. Had all lifeboats been filled to their maximum, Ferreiro estimates that twice as many lives could have been saved.
