Travelers at the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border are reporting significant delays and inadequate conditions, raising concerns about the efficiency and humanitarian standards of border control. A recent video shared by a traveler detailed two separate incidents of prolonged waits and lack of basic amenities at Kazakh border crossings.
During an exit from Kyrgyzstan into Kazakhstan, the traveler and other passengers were reportedly held for nearly an hour in a narrow, overcrowded, and poorly ventilated corridor. Luggage further obstructed movement, making it impossible to move forward or backward.
A more severe incident occurred on a return journey from Egypt to Bishkek, transiting through Almaty. At the Ak-Zhol checkpoint on the Kazakh side, the passport control system allegedly malfunctioned, leading to a five-hour wait. Travelers described a dense, unmoving queue with no access to water, restrooms, or seating. Reports indicated that children were crying from distress, and an elderly individual became unwell, with no assistance provided by border personnel. The traveler noted that manual processing, which should be an option in such cases, was not offered.
Following the video's release, numerous other travelers shared similar experiences, highlighting a pattern of long waits, lack of facilities, and unhelpful staff at the Kazakh border. Concerns are growing about the impact of these conditions on vulnerable travelers and the overall image of the border services.
