Can You Watch TV While Driving? German Lawyer Clarifies Traffic Law
Drivers often wonder about the legality of using entertainment devices like televisions or smartphones for video playback while behind the wheel. According to German lawyer Thorsten Frühmark, while the Road Traffic Act (StVO) does not explicitly ban watching TV, it strictly prohibits any activity that distracts the driver from traffic. "You will get a fine," Frühmark warns, emphasizing the clear risk of distraction posed by visual media. He further explains that such distractions could also lead to significant problems with vehicle insurance in the event of an accident. However, Frühmark clarifies that passengers are permitted to watch videos, and drivers are allowed to listen to audio content, such as from YouTube videos, as long as it does not impair their ability to focus on the road. This distinction highlights the law's focus on driver attention and road safety.
