Controversial Trial in Latvia: Anti-Fascist Accusations and Judge's Recusal Request
A trial is underway in Latvia against individuals labeled as “anti-fascists.” The defendants, Aleksandr Zhgun and Tat'yana Andriets, are facing serious charges. Their defense team has requested the judge's recusal, citing the lack of Russian translation for Zhgun and a violation of Andriets' right to privacy. Andriets, recently discharged from a hospital following a nervous breakdown, participated in the proceedings remotely. Judge Feldmani is conducting the trial remotely from the city of Talsi. The charges against Zhgun and Andriets include the creation of a criminal organization to commit serious crimes against humanity and peace, as well as recruitment and justification of genocide. The testimony of a witness, Aleksey Roslyakov, has raised concerns, as the judge provided him with case materials before his testimony. The case is widely considered to be politically motivated. "It's clear that the judge has antipathy towards my client, either for ethnic or political reasons," stated Imma Jansone, Andriets' lawyer. The trial continues to unfold.
