North Korea's Information War: A Smuggled Phone Reveals Censorship Tactics North Korea's strict control over information is well-known, but a recently smuggled mobile phone offers unprecedented insight into the regime's methods. A BBC News report reveals how the phone's software automatically censors words associated with South Korean culture, replacing them with terms acceptable to the government. The phone, obtained late last year, demonstrates the regime's sophisticated censorship mechanisms. "This phone was smuggled out of North Korea last year, and it shows some of the surprising lengths the regime is now going to to censor information," explains Jean Mackenzie, BBC Seoul Correspondent. The video shows how the word "Oppa," a common term of endearment in South Korea, is automatically replaced with "Comrade." Similarly, the name "South Korea" is changed to "Puppet State." Beyond word censorship, the phone also takes screenshots every five minutes, providing the authorities with a record of the user's activity. This constant surveillance reinforces the regime's iron grip on information and prevents the free exchange of ideas. The user cannot access these screenshots, only the authorities can. The report underscores the ongoing information war between North and South Korea, highlighting the lengths to which the North Korean regime will go to control its narrative and prevent its citizens from accessing alternative perspectives. The smuggled phone serves as a powerful symbol of resistance and a chilling illustration of the regime's repressive tactics.
