Joshua Tree is otherworldly. At this new hotel, you'll feel like you're sleepin…
Modern, minimal and modular, Reset Hotel is the first new hotel to be built from the ground up in the Joshua Tree area in 15 years.
In an innovative approach to hotel decor, designer and maker Ben Uyeda has unveiled his latest do-it-yourself project: crafting unique vases from natural rocks. Uyeda, known for his creative 'design and make stuff' philosophy, is preparing these bespoke pieces for his upcoming hotel, aiming to infuse a distinctive, handcrafted aesthetic. The process, detailed in a recent video, involves using a Ryobi angle grinder to create a flat base on egg-shaped rocks, enabling them to stand as stable vases. Following this, a hammer drill is utilized to bore a central hole, first a quarter-inch, then expanded to 3/8-inch, to accommodate dried botanical arrangements.Uyeda explained his motivation, stating, 'I didn't really like the idea of spending a lot of money or buying mass-produced stuff. So I think we're just going to use rocks with dried plants that come right from the property.' He added that each vase takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, and he appreciates that 'no two will ever be the same,' ensuring a truly unique touch for each hotel room. While the project showcases creative reuse of natural materials, some viewers raised safety concerns regarding the dust generated during grinding and drilling. One commenter advised, 'Please use water while drilling to keep the dust from becoming airborne. If you breathe it you can get silicosis.' Uyeda's project highlights a growing trend towards sustainable and personalized design in hospitality.
