I've planned weddings for 20 years—here's how I know who will get divorced
Robin 'Birdie' Yarusso told Newsweek: "There are clear behaviors that come out during the wedding planning process that indicate larger issues."
A seasoned wedding and proposal planner, known online as "Birdie," has shared her insights into behaviors that she believes predict a couple's divorce even before they walk down the aisle. Drawing from her experience planning over a hundred weddings and numerous proposals, Birdie highlights specific "red flags" observed during the planning process.According to Birdie, one significant indicator is the act of "smashing cake in each other's faces" during the reception. "For some reason, none of my brides and grooms that did that are still together," she stated, noting a consistent pattern of marital failure among such couples.Another critical sign, she explains, involves financial disrespect and secrecy. "If you are not respectful of the budget, but the other person is... let's add this to the flowers, don't tell Jim, let's do that, don't tell," Birdie elaborated, referring to instances where one partner hides expenses from the other. She asserts that these "don't tells" often lead to divorce.Furthermore, Birdie points to parental overreach as a predictor of marital strife. "If that mother's overstepping where she shouldn't, and her child doesn't check her, it usually leads to problems in the marriage," she observed, emphasizing the importance of establishing boundaries with in-laws.Finally, a complete lack of engagement from one partner, particularly the husband, in wedding planning is cited as a major concern. "His one job was to pick the DJ, and we're a week before the wedding, and he hasn't gotten that done," she shared as an example. "That husband is completely checked out." Birdie concludes that these signs suggest a couple is "more focused on the big day rather than the marriage itself," setting them up for future failure.
