Gagauz Homes: A Window into Moldova's Rich Cultural Heritage
Gagauzia: A Look into the Traditional Homes of the Gagauz People Nestled in southern Moldova, the Gagauz people maintain a unique cultural identity. A recent video produced by laf.md in collaboration with the CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, as part of their "Gagauzia – 30 Years of Autonomy" campaign, offers a glimpse into their history through the lens of their traditional homes. The video uses a blend of historical footage and interviews with experts like Evdokiya Sorocanu, a researcher from the Moldova Academy of Sciences, to paint a picture of Gagauz life. Sorocanu explains the etymology of the word "ev" (house), highlighting its connection to the Russian word "dom" (house) and its significance in Gagauz culture. The video shows examples of traditional houses, noting their characteristic rectangular shape and the importance of the family hearth. Ekaterina Cernioglo, a Besalma village museum curator, adds that icons were always placed on the eastern wall, facing the rising sun, symbolizing the start of a new day and new life. The video also showcases traditional Gagauz household items, such as the "sofra" (a small round table), and the use of garlic, even in wedding traditions, symbolizing unity and togetherness. The video concludes with a montage of Gagauz homes, emphasizing the enduring legacy of their traditions and culture.
