New Car Service Scam Targets Owners and Businesses: How to Protect Yourself
Kyiv, Ukraine – Car owners and service centers in Ukraine are urged to exercise extreme caution as a new sophisticated fraud scheme targeting the automotive sector has emerged. A recent video shared by a local car service expert details how scammers are attempting to defraud both businesses and individual car owners through deceptive phone calls. The scheme reportedly involves fraudsters contacting car service centers, posing as clients, and attempting to elicit specific information about vehicles currently undergoing repairs. According to the expert, if a manager is not sufficiently vigilant, they might inadvertently disclose details such as the car's make or model. Armed with this information, the scammers then directly contact the vehicle owner, impersonating representatives from the service center and demanding immediate prepayments for alleged services or parts. "Our manager was alert and recognized the fraud attempt immediately," stated the expert in the video. "But many people are naive, and scammers prey on them." He highlighted that such schemes are becoming increasingly common, citing another fraud where cars are listed for sale at significantly reduced prices to lure unsuspecting buyers into making advance payments. The video also featured an audio recording of a scam call, where the fraudster's demeanor quickly turned aggressive and abusive upon realizing their attempt to extract information was unsuccessful. Authorities advise the public to be wary of unsolicited calls requesting payments or sensitive information, especially regarding vehicle services. Always verify requests directly with the service center or individual through official contact channels before making any payments or sharing personal data.
