Nurse's Sudden Blindness Leads to Glaucoma Diagnosis Linked to Common Medication

A nurse, who prefers to remain unnamed, recently shared her alarming experience of sudden vision loss that led to a diagnosis of acute closed-angle glaucoma. The incident began last Thursday while she was on shift, when her vision unexpectedly deteriorated. Initially, after undergoing preliminary checks, medical professionals assured her there was no issue with her brain. However, her vision continued to worsen overnight, prompting her to seek an optometrist. She faced challenges securing an immediate appointment, and an additional hurdle arose when she discovered a flat tire on her car at the hospital. Upon finally seeing an optometrist, the severity of her condition became apparent. The optometrist noted unusually high eye pressures and narrow angles, along with spots mimicking Lyme disease. She was immediately referred to an ophthalmologist. After an urgent appointment with an ophthalmologist in Plano, the diagnosis of acute closed-angle glaucoma was confirmed. The ophthalmologist suggested her Wellbutrin medication might be the cause. The nurse described the emotional toll of the experience, including her fear of going blind, highlighting the unexpected and rapid onset of the condition.
