Queensland to Evict Social Housing Tenants Earning Above Threshold
Queensland is cracking down on social housing tenants who earn too much. A Brisbane couple earning over \$200,000 a year highlights the controversy. The state government announced plans to evict tenants who haven't updated their income since checks were paused during the pandemic. Housing Minister Sam O'Connor said, "But if you're one of these tenants that hasn't been checked for half a decade, it's meant that you may not even be eligible for social housing anymore." The lowest income threshold for a single person with no children is approximately \$31,700 annually, while a couple with three or more children needs an income under \$58,300. Tenants who are eligible but haven't paid the correct amount will see their rent increased, capped at \$15 a week. This policy sparks debate about affordability and fairness in social housing.
