Squid Game Director Hints at Franchise Expansion Beyond Season 3

SEOUL – Hwang Dong-hyeok, the acclaimed director of Netflix's global phenomenon "Squid Game," has shed light on the future of the series ahead of its third season release on June 27. In a recent interview, Dong-hyeok confirmed that the upcoming season will mark the definitive conclusion of the protagonist Gi-hun's narrative arc. However, fans of the dystopian thriller can anticipate further exploration of the "Squid Game" universe. The director revealed his personal ambition to develop a spin-off, potentially delving into the mysterious world and history of the masked figures who oversee the deadly games. "I think this season 3 marks the end of the story of this hero, Gi-hun (456)," Dong-hyeok stated. "But on a personal plan, I think of a spin-off (a derived series). It would be a slightly different story. The idea would be to explore the universe of the people who wear masks." Furthermore, Dong-hyeok acknowledged ongoing discussions about expanding the franchise. He mentioned hearing "rumors about a 'Squid Game USA'" and confirmed that an animated version of "Squid Game" is currently being considered. "I know that an animated version of 'Squid Game' is a project envisaged," he added. "Therefore, I don't think that this season 3 marks the end of the 'Squid Game universe.' I look forward to seeing how Squid Game will continue."
