SYDNEY, Australia – At the recent SmashCon/ComicCon event, attendees dressed as beloved characters from various anime, manga, and video games shared insights into who knows about their elaborate hobby. BuzzFeedOz conducted interviews, asking cosplayers about the extent to which their friends, family, and colleagues are aware of their costumed alter egos. Responses varied significantly among participants. One cosplayer, dressed as a character from Jujutsu Kaisen, revealed, "Only my sister knows." Another, in a vibrant, crocheted ensemble, stated, "Mum and Dad are very supportive, they drove me all the way here actually." A participant embodying Goku from Dragon Ball Z proudly declared, "Everybody, I make it very public." Some cosplayers noted that while friends might be aware, colleagues often remain in the dark. Conversely, one individual in a wizard costume shared that his boss not only knows but also allows him to display cosplay pictures in the office. The interviews collectively paint a picture of the diverse ways cosplayers navigate their passion within their social and professional lives, from maintaining secrecy to embracing full public disclosure.
