Historic Night at the Tonys: Black Playwright and Actor Make History
The 2025 Tony Awards marked a historic night for Black theater. Brandon Jacobs Jenkins' play, "Purpose," won Best Play, a first for a Black playwright since August Wilson's 1987 win for "Fences." This win is particularly significant given the ongoing conversation surrounding diversity and representation in the arts. 'It's an incredible honor,' Jenkins stated in his acceptance speech, visibly moved by the recognition. The evening also celebrated Kara Young, who won Best Featured Actress for her performance in "Purpose," becoming the first Black actor to win back-to-back Tonys. Young's win further underscores the momentous achievements of Black artists at this year's ceremony. The Tony Awards' recognition of Jenkins and Young serves as an inspiring symbol of progress and a testament to their exceptional talent.
