Apple to Pay $95M for Siri Eavesdropping
Apple to Pay $95 Million in Siri Eavesdropping Lawsuit Settlement Apple will pay $95 million to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging that its virtual assistant, Siri, illegally recorded and shared users' private conversations with third-party businesses. The lawsuit, filed in 2021 by California resident Fumiko Lopez, claimed that Siri's unauthorized recordings were used to target consumers with personalized advertisements. Lopez stated, "It's a violation of privacy that many people may not even be aware of." The settlement covers consumers who owned Apple devices with Siri activated between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. Those eligible can file a claim to receive up to $20 per device, with a maximum of five devices per claim. While Apple denies any wrongdoing, the settlement suggests a potential vulnerability in Siri's privacy protections. The case highlights the increasing concerns about data privacy in the age of smart devices and the importance of user awareness and protection.
