A recent incident at a Kohl's self-checkout in Madison, Wisconsin, has sparked controversy after a customer, identified as Shanigel Goodwan, recorded and shared a video accusing a store worker of racial profiling. The video, uploaded on August 24, 2025, shows a heated exchange between Ms. Goodwan and a female employee, with Ms. Goodwan alleging that the worker targeted her with undue scrutiny. According to Ms. Goodwan's account in the video, the store worker allegedly 'ran into the fitting room' to question her about items and then waited until she was in the process of self-checkout to intervene. Ms. Goodwan stated, "Did I ask for any assistance because I'm clearly already rung up with all of my items, the same amount number of items that are right here are going to ring up right here, but instead you came into the fitting room, you ran into the fitting room and said 'Oh my gosh, do you need to take all of those items in the fitting room' when I was in the fitting room." She further claimed that another employee was 'blacking' her from completing her transaction. The employee in the video, who does not speak, is seen handling items from Ms. Goodwan's cart and appearing to compare them with the self-checkout screen. Comments on the video offer mixed reactions, with some users supporting Ms. Goodwan's claims of racial profiling and sharing similar experiences at Kohl's, while others suggest that the employee was simply ensuring all items were scanned correctly. One commenter noted, "The associate rung up 8 items and you rung up 6 items. Not the same amount of items as what you rung up…. But ok." Another added, "Her total $142.55 with out rewards, yours was $110.98 with $1.43 in rewards, that’s what she was trying to tell you. The math ain’t mathing." Kohl's has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident. The video has garnered significant attention online, prompting discussions about customer service, racial bias in retail, and the accuracy of self-checkout systems.
