Moldova Sounds Alarm: Urgent Action Needed to Save Bee Populations
Moldova's Bee Crisis: ANSA Urges Action to Protect Pollinators Moldova is facing a growing threat to its bee populations, prompting the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) to call for urgent action. Speaking on World Bee Day, May 20th, ANSA highlighted the critical role bees play in the country's agriculture, pollinating over 75% of flowering plants. "Bees are essential for our food security," stated an ANSA representative. "Without them, many essential crops would be at risk." The agency cited habitat loss, the use of toxic pesticides, and the effects of climate change as major factors contributing to the decline in bee populations. To address this, ANSA has issued a series of recommendations, including planting honey-bearing flowers like lavender, clover, and sunflowers; reducing the use of dangerous pesticides; and promoting ecological agriculture. They also emphasized the importance of supporting local and sustainable beekeeping practices. Furthermore, ANSA is encouraging beekeepers and farmers to utilize the BeeProtect information system, a national application that facilitates rapid communication to prevent accidental poisoning of bee colonies. This proactive approach underscores Moldova's commitment to safeguarding its bee population and ensuring the long-term health of its agricultural sector. The initiative demonstrates a concerted effort to protect biodiversity and food security.
