Moldova Energy Protest: Socialists Demand Gas Price Transparency
Moldovan Socialist Party Protests High Energy Costs Chisinau, Moldova – On June 10, 2025, members of the Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) staged a protest outside the offices of Energocom, the state-owned energy company. The demonstrators voiced their anger over what they described as excessively high energy prices, particularly for natural gas. Their key demand was for complete transparency regarding Energocom's gas procurement contracts and the disclosure of the actual import prices. "Energocom has decided to keep the real cost of gas acquisition secret!" read one of the many signs held by protesters. Vlad Batrincea, a PSRM executive secretary and deputy, addressed the crowd, stating, "They are bringing in a new company that transports gas across the country, and they've increased the tariff tenfold!" Alexandr Slusari, a member of Energocom's administrative council, responded to the protest by stating his confusion over the company's connection to the current gas prices. He suggested the protest was politically motivated. The government has recently announced a plan to secure a loan of up to €400 million to allow Energocom to purchase gas at more affordable prices. This loan has been a point of contention between the government and the opposition. The protest highlights the growing public concern over energy costs in Moldova, and the ongoing debate surrounding government transparency and energy policy.
