A Polish beauty vlogger, known as Clarisamakeup, has shed light on a peculiar and often undiscussed pregnancy symptom: Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER). In a recent video, she detailed her personal experience with the condition, which she encountered around the 30th-31st week of her pregnancy. Clarisamakeup described experiencing sudden, intense feelings of internal emptiness, depression, and a profound sense of homesickness just before her milk let-down. "It was such a strange feeling, I couldn't even explain it to my husband," she recounted. "I thought I was going crazy, or that it was the beginning of postpartum depression." After extensive personal research, as the topic was not covered in her birthing classes, she discovered the term D-MER. She explained that the phenomenon is attributed to a sudden drop in dopamine levels when oxytocin and prolactin are released during milk ejection. Dopamine, often referred to as the 'pleasure hormone,' is temporarily suppressed, leading to these dysphoric feelings. "Imagine you're having a great day, and suddenly a wave of depression and emptiness washes over you," she said, illustrating the abruptness of the experience. She noted that these feelings would dissipate shortly after the milk let-down. Clarisamakeup highlighted that D-MER affects only a subset of women, and she was one of the 'chosen ones.' She emphasized the critical role of mental health, especially for those considering extended breastfeeding, as this symptom can significantly impact a mother's well-being. She urged other women to share their experiences to raise awareness about this under-recognized condition.
