Millennial mom with 2 Jobs on why her generation is 'working to survive'
Colleen Feeney, 35, told Newsweek: "We're expected to carry the entire mental load and made to believe that's just the way it's supposed to be."
A recent social media video has sparked discussion regarding the work ethic and financial realities of the millennial generation. In the video, a woman responds to a previous clip that questioned the "urgency" of millennials in the workplace. The creator, identifying as a millennial, stated that the perception of laziness is a misunderstanding of the significant challenges her generation faces. She explained, "Most of us are working two to three jobs. I work a full-time job, a part-time job, and my husband works a full-time job, and we own a small business." She highlighted the exhaustion resulting from these efforts, adding, "At the end of the day, it is absolutely exhausting. If we were able to make a living wage off of one job... we probably would be putting in 110% of our effort." However, she emphasized that current economic conditions necessitate multiple jobs, leading to burnout. The creator also touched upon the educational expectations placed on millennials. "Most of us were told that we had to go to college in order to get these great jobs, and so we did go to college and we're still not making a liveable wage." She concluded by asserting that the issue is not laziness but rather a generation feeling "exhausted, burnt out, and absolutely defeated" due to persistent financial instability.
