Milan, Italy - Cesira Ton, affectionately known as Emilietta, a beloved figure who resided at Milan's Malpensa Airport Terminal 1 for over two decades, passed away on August 17th at the age of 86. Her death marks the end of a unique chapter in the airport's history, where she was a familiar and respected presence among staff and passengers alike. Emilietta, described as "minuta e ostinata" (petite and stubborn), made the bustling airport her home, famously stating, "Qui mi sento libera, qui sto bene" (Here I feel free, here I am well) while seated on a bench with her belongings. She considered herself "Padrona del mio castello" (Mistress of my castle) and even "proprietaria" (owner) of the non-place that, for her, held a clear identity as home. For over twenty years, Cesira navigated the corridors of Malpensa, living amidst the constant flow of arrivals and departures. She was known to everyone, from hostesses and security guards to baristas and police officers. "Non sono una barbona, ho una storia tutta mia" (I am not a homeless person, I have a story of my own), she would assert, emphasizing the unique path she had chosen. Only three years ago, at the age of 83, Emilietta reluctantly moved to the Rsa Anni Azzurri care home in Dormelletto, in the Novara region, as her physical health began to decline. However, those who knew her attest that her mind remained sharp until the very end. Her story, a testament to finding home and freedom in unexpected places, continues to resonate with those who encountered her at Malpensa.
